A healthy, active lifestyle and diet is so important to prevent many diseases including type II diabetes.  Spotting diabetes in advance consists of paying attention to prediabetes symptoms.  What are you doing to prevent and combat diabetes?

Chronic Diseases and Mental Health Conditions

Today, chronic diseases are among the most pressing problems in our society. They comprise 7 of the top 10 leading causes of death in the U.S. About half of U.S. adults have a chronic condition, and 1 in 4 are managing at least 2 conditions. Mental health is another important concern, with 1 in 5 Americans estimated to experience mental illness in a given year.

Prevention and better management are possible! Estimates are that 20 to 40%, and possibly up to 80%, of major chronic conditions, including certain types of cancer, stroke, diabetes, and heart disease are preventable with a healthy environment and lifestyle. For those who are already have chronic conditions, including mental health conditions, treatment and better management are often possible through lifestyle choices.

Small Start for Big Impact

True to our heritage, entrepreneurship and innovation have led to advances in chronic disease prevention and management. Lark Health Coach was the brainchild of Lark CEO Julia Hu. The app has been clinically shown to help users lose weight, and that's a big deal when you consider that each pound of weight loss lowers diabetes risk by 16% if you have prediabetes. What Will Your Role Be?

There is plenty more work to be done as we work to get our society as healthy as possible. If you will be an undergraduate or graduate student at an accredited college or university for the 2018/2019 academic year, and you have a vision, we hope you will apply for the Lark Prediabetes Symptoms Scholarship.

The Scholarship

Prizes

Scholarships are in the amounts of $2,000 (first prize), $1,000 (second prize), and $500 (third prize).

Eligibility

Students who will be enrolled full-time at an accredited college or university during the 2018/2019 academic year, or who are currently enrolled. You may be a current (or just-graduated) high school senior, or a current college/university student.

Essay and Deadline

Society has many challenges. With those challenges come many opportunities to become healthier through improving physical or mental health, or the health of community relations. With your skills, knowledge, and ideas, how do you plan to improve the health of the society you live in? Address this topic in 1,000 words or less.

The deadline to submit your application is December 18, 2018 at 11:59 p.m., ET.
